Thanks to those who have signed up for “The Class.” Let this be your time each week to sharpen up.
This course is all about you. It’s for athletes who say, “I don’t want to just go to college, I want to thrive there.” We’re going to lock in to build skills and habits that translate on and off the field. Consider it a collision of mental and life skills that translate from the batter’s box to test day in school. The tools will be given and you’ll do the work. The Class is unique, challenging and fun.
Training
If writing a goal increases the probability of achieving it, what is the best way to set yours? If consistently writing three gratitude statements improves sleep, confidence and resilience, how do I find my three? And, if reflecting on a day, a game or a practice makes me clearer on the road to getting better tomorrow, what is the simplest way to reflect?
For 30-minutes we’ll dive into directed lessons and videos, studying examples like him.
The final 20-minutes of class will be a conversation with passionate leaders like them.
Begins: Wed., Jan. 17th, 6pm PT
How: Link emailed each Monday
What to bring: A notebook & pen*

Mapping Development
Former Angels GM Billy Eppler said Shohei Ohtani is a puzzle-solver.
“They want the learning, they want the struggle, and then they want the achievement,” Eppler said of people wired like Ohtani. “I think he tackles his profession that way. He wants to learn new things. He wants to continually grow. He wants mastery, and he’s going to stop at nothing — nothing’s going to get in his way until he reaches the point of mastering his game.” (From MLB’s The Athletic)
He’s not just a puzzle solver. He’s a map builder. Ohtani organized for mastery in high school. As a sophomore, he was given an assignment to put his development plan on paper. The “Dream Map,” known in Japan, would ultimately serve as Ohtani’s roadmap to success. Here it is translated.
Character and Makeup
What’s motivating is that three core boxes describe makeup and character, and specific priorities that are accessible to all. Ohtani’s words, although translated, reflect simple steps he would take to build Mental Toughness, Personality and Karma. As a precursor to your own Dream Map, read the three on character and makeup.
Active in Your Development
To begin building your map, grab a notebook. Write a few of these targets for YOU. Feel free to borrow from the examples Ohtani wrote as a 16-year old in rural Japan.
Mental Toughness

Personality

Karma

Ohtani’s commitment to honoring the game, and those in it, is reflected throughout the three sections. What do you think he meant by these 4 in the Karma box?
Greetings:
Pick up trash:
Read books:
Respect umpires:
Just as frequently discussed goals get achieved, frequently discussed ideas are better understood and easier to implement. Show the Karma box to someone at home. Have a 5+ minute conversation about it. Two questions to start the talk might be:
Why would Ohtani choose to pick up trash:
Why would he commit to reading books:
A Japanese term (Kokoro) unites notions of heart, mind, and spirit. These three elements are seen as indivisible from one another. Shohei seems to be an example in his big and small actions. By studying the maps of great players you learn their process while discovering one that works for you.
