Work - Week #9
Sweat often. Prioritize always.
How a Scout Sees It
In the final 20-minutes of class, Tim Kissner, a man who signed many of the players we see on TV, joins The Class. During 22 years in pro scouting Tim received an odd and resounding compliment. The Seattle Mariners traded more than 20 of his players. In MLB terms, the players had value. In scouting terms, Tim was right often.
For players, understanding the art and science of scouting fuels smart development. The answers to the test come from the questions scouts ask themselves while watching from behind a backstop. Questions like these float in the minds of talent evaluators…
“Does he have a plan in BP?”
”How does he interact with his teammates?”
”Is he a winner?”
Tim’s experience in a multitude of roles allow him to challenge conventional wisdom. He sees and teaches the value of work beyond the 5-tools and alluring technology. It’s a view from every angle and most continents.
Area Scout, Indians
Pacific Rim coordinator, Phillies
West Coast Crosschecker, Cubs
Director of International Scouting, Mariners
Special Assignments, Mets
From MLB Trade Rumors:
Kissner signed players such as Travis d’Arnaud, Kyle Kendrick, Vance Worley, Scott Mathieson, Andrew Carpenter, Anthony Gose, and Justin De Fratus. Tim’s Latin American signings include big leaguers Julio Rodriguez, Freddy Peralta, Luis Rengifo, Enyel De Los Santos, and Guillermo Heredia, as well as top prospect Noelvi Marte.
Tim was born in Homer, Alaska, and grew up in Juneau. He played baseball at Mendocino Community College and Oregon State and has a masters degree from Eastern Oregon State College.
"I’m looking for opportunities to give back to young people and share my experience in baseball.”
Deciding it was time for something new after a career spent scouting all around the world, Tim returned home to become a police officer.

(New) Return to Throw Manual by Jaeger and Sullivan
As usual, Alan Jaeger has a clear and unique way to view arm care. As usual, he did his homework. This time with Randy Sullivan, founder of the Florida Baseball ARMory. Alan and Randy created a thorough Return to Throw Manual built on the principles each taught players like Hunter Greene and Justin Verlander.
Injury expert Will Carroll writes for Under the Knife. He shares the current status of "Rehab Protocols" and how Jaeger/Sullivan are improving the process.
